Feeling more like this right now
But my masters group is called the Barracudas, not the Goldfish.
Week two- so far, so good. I committed to showing up for THPRD masters swim practice 4 times a week, and survived week 1. My arms still hadn't recovered from week 1 when I went to practice on Monday morning (after 2 days rest)! Also during the first week, I was so excited to swim that I showed up 30 minutes early for the 11:30 am practice and 15 minutes early for the 5:15 am practice. Or maybe it's been so long since I attended regularly, that I forgot what time the practices actually start. Well it's week 2, and I've got that down. Dolphin kick? Don't have that down. Usually when I show up for the Tues/Thurs IM practice I am allowed to do freestyle, since I have enough trouble with that stroke as is. No point in adding other bad strokes to the mix at this point. But last Thursday he asked me to dolphin kick. Legs together, use your abs...what? My abs? I tried it and didn't even move forward. Yeah, I'm going to substitute flutter until I figure that one out. I did OK with the breaststroke kick though. Flexed feet= good.
The workouts have been hard, especially when there are other people in my lane making it harder to cheat. I try to avoid getting lapped by my lane mates. At last Friday's practice I had two gals in my lane that are a little faster than me, but not much. So that was good- just enough to push me. The coach told me this week that I'm already getting faster. But maybe he was just trying to encourage me, as I clutched the edge of the pool gasping for breath. He also said that I need a nickname since AH-LAH-NAH takes too long to yell. Can't wait for that one. Also he informed us all that we'll soon be kicking off the "February Fitness Challenge". Again, can't wait. I feel pretty challenged already, really.
Swimming goals for 2010!
1. Masters practice 4x per week through April. With the exception of one week each in February, March, and April that I won't make it due to being out of town.
2. Learn how to flip turn. This may be You Tube material.
3. A half-ironman swim time that starts with 3. Any number starting with 3 will do.
4. Move up from lane 1 at masters :P This may be a year-long project.
Swim events
1. Geckos Hagg Lake open water swim on May 23rd
2. Some swim meets with masters, TBD
The best part of all this? I will be buying more swim suits. Got one in the mail right now. And a new wetsuit since the one I have is about 4 years old now and pretty hole-y. Maybe it's all about the wetsuit.
